Overview

University Health, in collaboration with The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and the University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy, is pleased to offer a Postgraduate Year 2 (PGY2) pediatric pharmacy residency. This 12-month residency is designed to provide a challenging training environment for individuals interested in developing clinical competency in the area of pediatrics.

As full-time employees of University Health, residents receive a competitive annual stipend of $62,000 plus excellent employee benefits. Residents are also appointed as Clinical Instructors with The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy and University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy.

Purpose

The University Health PGY2 Pediatric pharmacy residency program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in the specialized area of Pediatric Pharmacy practice. The PGY2 residency provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 Pediatric pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

Description

The University Health PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency Program provides a challenging, well-rounded training environment that will expose residents to pediatric disease states seen in a variety of clinical areas, including but not limited to:

• General pediatrics
• Pediatric specialty services
• Pediatric intensive care
• Pediatric congenital cardiac care
• Neonatal intensive care
• Pediatric hematology and oncology
• Pediatric solid organ transplant
• Pediatric emergency medicine

Residents will have opportunities to care for pediatric patients and teach and precept pharmacy students and PGY1 residents.

In addition, residents will demonstrate leadership and practice management skills in completing a pediatric research project and pediatric drug utilization evaluation. Graduates of the program are prepared to take clinical pharmacy specialist and faculty positions related to pediatrics.
