Overview

University Health, in collaboration with The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and the University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy, is pleased to offer an ASHP Accredited Postgraduate Year 2 (PGY2) pharmacy residency in emergency medicine with adult emergency medicine and trauma and emergency surgery emphases. This 12-month residency provides a rigorous training environment for clinical competency development in emergency medicine.

As full-time employees of University Health, residents receive a competitive annual stipend of $62,000 plus excellent employee benefits. Residents are appointed as Clinical Instructors with The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy and University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy.

Purpose

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

Description

The University Health PGY2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency Program provides a well-rounded training environment in various emergency medicine practice areas, including but not limited to adult and pediatric emergency medicine, trauma and emergency surgery, toxicology, surgical/trauma ICU, and medicine ICU. Residents will care for pediatric and adult patients, both inpatients and outpatients, teach and precept pharmacy students, respond to critical patient resuscitations and code blue events. In addition, residents will complete an emergency medicine research project and demonstrate leadership and practice management skills through committee involvement and protocol development. Graduates are prepared to take clinical pharmacy specialist and faculty positions related to emergency medicine.
