Overview

University Health, in collaboration with The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and the University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy, is pleased to offer a Postgraduate Year 2 (PGY2) pharmacy residency in internal medicine. This 12-month residency is designed to provide a challenging training environment for individuals interested in developing clinical competency in the area of internal medicine.

As full-time employees of University Health, residents receive a competitive annual stipend of $62,000 plus excellent employee benefits. Residents are also appointed as Clinical Instructors with The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy and University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy.

Purpose

PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

Description

The University Health PGY2 Internal Medicine Pharmacy Residency Program provides a challenging, well-rounded training environment that will expose residents to a variety of acute disease states and clinical practice settings including but not limited to general medicine, oncology medicine, transplant medicine, hospitalist medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine, infectious diseases, cardiology, neurology and critical care. In addition to direct patient care of hospitalized patients, residents will have opportunities to develop their academic skills by precepting pharmacy students and teaching other learners such as medical students and medical residents. Residents will also demonstrate leadership and practice management skills through completion of an internal medicine research project, committee involvement and protocol development. Graduates of the program are prepared to take clinical pharmacy specialist and faculty positions related to internal medicine.
