Diagnosing a Pelvic Floor Condition
Your doctor or physical therapist will ask you about your symptoms and how long they have been happening. You will also fill out a survey at your initial consultation outlining your medical history, symptoms and goals.

- Pain or discomfort in the pelvic area

Your physical therapist may also perform some tests to locate the source of your condition, including:
- Internal and external pelvic floor examination
- Lower back, hip and lower extremity examination
Treating a Pelvic Floor Condition
After a physical examination and a review of your medical history, your team will develop a treatment plan tailored to you. Our physical therapists can restore pelvic floor function and reduce pain through multiple therapies that strengthen the muscles.
Outpatient Treatments
- Aligning the spine and pelvic bones to reduce stress and pain in the pelvis
- Biofeedback therapy to retrain muscles when there’s muscular dysfunction. This can be very helpful for those who struggle with urinary and fecal incontinence.
- Electrical stimulation and heat to reduce pain
- Exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and the lower abdominal muscles (kegels)
- Manual therapy to minimize pain and increase muscle mobility. This includes specialized techniques to help put joints and muscles back in alignment to increase mobility and minimize ongoing discomfort in your back, hips and legs.
- Significant patient education about daily activities, food habits and home exercises
We also provide postural education and training for our patients. Poor posture can prevent muscles from working properly and cause other muscles, ligaments and tendons to become inflamed.
