Purpose
Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY1) pharmacy residency training to develop clinical pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency program are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions and board certification in the advanced practice area if available.
Description
The University Health PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency Program provides a comprehensive, individualized training experience designed to prepare pharmacists for advanced pediatric pharmacy practice. Residents develop expertise through intentional sequence learning experiences that progress from foundational pediatric practice to independent management of medically complex neonates, infants, children and adolescents across a broad spectrum of acute and specialty pediatric practice areas, including but not limited to:
- General pediatrics
- General pediatrics: specialty services
- Pediatric intensive care
- Pediatric congenital cardiac care
- Neonatal intensive care
- Pediatric hematology and oncology
- Pediatric solid organ transplant
- Pediatric emergency medicine
- Maternal-fetal medicine
- Pediatric infectious disease
- Pediatric neurology
- Cystic fibrosis ambulatory care
Through progressive responsibility and competency-based development, residents assume increasing accountability for direct patient care, clinical decision-making, emergency response, medication-use systems, and learner development, culminating in functioning as the primary pediatric clinical pharmacist during the program's advanced practice experience. Residents serve as an integral member of interprofessional healthcare teams where pediatric clinical pharmacists are recognized and trusted medication experts and essential contributors to patient care. The residency provides diverse opportunities to optimize medication-use outcomes, progressively assume responsibilities during pediatric emergency response, contribute to quality improvement initiatives and provide evidence-based pharmaceutical care across multiple pediatric practice settings.
Residents participate in a comprehensive longitudinal curriculum that emphasizes teaching, scholarship, leadership and practice management. The longitudinal curriculum includes precepting and teaching pharmacy students and PGY1 residents, completion of an original pediatric research project, presentation of research results at institutional, regional and/or national meetings, participation in a clinical outcomes assessment and clinical practice improvement initiatives, development of educational programs and contribution to departmental and organizational committees.
Graduates of the University Health PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency Program are prepared to function as independent pediatric clinical pharmacy specialists who provide evidence-based, patient-centered care, serve as trusted members of interprofessional healthcare teams, contribute to the advancement of pediatric pharmacy through scholarship and quality improvement, pursue board certification and are well positioned for careers in advanced pediatric practice, academia, leadership and other specialized pediatric pharmacy roles.
