What to Expect
After your referral for a liver transplant, you’ll come for your first appointment. You’ll meet our care team and transplant doctors and talk about the evaluation process.
Bring your questions about liver disease or transplants. We’ll take the time to provide answers and get to know you.
Blood Test
Expect a care team member to take blood to determine:
- Blood type
- Exposure to infectious diseases, such as hepatitis and HIV
- Liver and immune system function
Next Steps
At the end of your first visit, you’ll know if you will proceed to the liver transplant evaluation and testing stage.
Evaluation Scheduling
Your pre-transplant coordinator will set up a series of appointments for your evaluation and testing. We will schedule those appointments during your first visit.
Your evaluation will be in San Antonio. You will need to arrange to stay in San Antonio for three to four days.
Out-of-Town Patients
If you live a long distance from the University Health Transplant Institute, ask about scheduling your first visit and full evaluation and testing on the same day. That means you may be able to reduce the number of times you travel between home and San Antonio.
