Pediatric Diabetes Testing & Diagnosis
Diabetes & Endocrine Testing
Your doctor will most likely order blood tests to determine if your child has diabetes. Depending on your child’s symptoms and family history, your doctor may order these tests:
- A1C test: Measures the amount of glucose in blood for the past couple of months. A high A1C level indicates diabetes.
- Oral glucose tolerance test: This measures your child’s blood sugar levels two hours after drinking a glucose drink.
- Fasting plasma glucose test: This test is performed after your child fasts for eight hours.
- Random plasma glucose test: Your child’s doctor may order this if your child is experiencing increased thirst, hunger or urination.
Growth & Development Testing
Our team specializes in the evaluation of growth-related disorders. Evaluation of growth-related disorders typically includes:
- A thorough medical and family history
- A review of your child’s growth pattern
- A bone age X-ray (X-ray of the left wrist and hand)
- Various screening laboratory tests
Further evaluation may include growth hormone stimulation testing. This is a specialized procedure where your child is given medications to stimulate growth hormone release. If your child does not produce enough growth hormone after the testing, they may have a growth hormone deficiency. Typically, evaluation includes testing with two different medications.
Other Endocrine Evaluation and/or Stimulation Testing
Endocrinology conditions may also be due to disorders of the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, ovary, testes or bone. Expertise specific to pediatric endocrinology evaluations for these conditions is available by board-certified pediatric endocrinologists.
