Association of Clinical Pastoral Education
The Bexar County Health District: University Health Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Residency is provisionally accredited by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education. ACPE is the premier, Department of Education recognized organization that provides the highest quality CPE programs for spiritual care professionals of any faith and in any setting.
What is Clinical Pastoral Education?
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is an experience in process education, which has been shaped by history and yet remains responsive to the present-day cultural developments that will affect your spiritual care formation.
The heart of CPE is reflection, discussion, and evaluation of the caregiving that you provide during your training. In a group of no fewer than three other students, a supervisor and additional consultants, you will explore what is happening in you as a caregiver, and what is happening to the people who are receiving your spiritual care practice. In your CPE experience, you will use verbatims, case studies, and other materials to present your spiritual care for supervision. The focus in seminars will be on what is happening to you, the caregiver, as well as what is happening to the people receiving your spiritual care practice.
In group, you will participate in discussions to assist you in understanding the orienting systems/theological issues present in you, your fellow students, and others. There will be opportunities to learn from the behavioral sciences while also reflecting on your own beliefs. These opportunities will enable you to draw from both in understanding the human condition. You will be challenged to think about groups and social structures as well as individual needs in defining how you provide spiritual care. You also will be part of a dynamic learning group with your peers and your supervisor, which will provide opportunities for mutual supervision, caregiving, challenge, and appreciation.
Clinical Pastoral Education Residency & Certified Educator Programs
CPE Residency
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is an action/reflective, interfaith, hands-on clinical ministry model of learning. The purpose of the University Health program is to develop competency in providing spiritual care for patients, families, and staff. Using case studies, verbatims, reflections, didactic sessions, individual supervision, and group seminars, students will gain self-awareness, crisis management skills, pastoral ministry skills, and evidence-based interventions while providing spiritual care in a medical facility.
CPE Residency
The CPE residency is a full-time, one-year program beginning in September each year. A unique feature of our residency program is the presentation of psychological/ spiritual assessment models as residents develop their theory and approach to spiritual care. A variety of beliefs and theological perspectives, as well as selected readings in spiritual care research and outcome-oriented chaplaincy are discussed. Spiritual Care residency is to enhance personal growth and the skills for effective support through empathy, excellence, and innovation. Students will gain experience providing broad range of spiritual care at a 1000 bed Level I Trauma Center where a full range of spiritual care is offered as well as grief, and bereavement support.
