What Happens After Evaluation?
When your pre-transplant evaluation is complete and test results are received, the University Health Transplant Patient Selection Committee meets to determine if you are ready to be placed on the list. You are not present for this meeting.
Kidney Transplant Selection Criteria
The kidney transplant list follows established selection criteria. The committee members will go over:
- Health concerns affecting successful transplant
- Medical history and co-existing health conditions
- Test results
It is important that you can get to San Antonio in the accorded time, stay for transplant aftercare and afford post-transplant medications. Selection is not based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual preference, handicap or national origin.
Notification of Selection
Rely on your transplant coordinator to contact you by phone and/or correspondence to inform you of your selection. After you receive the notification, you will be placed on the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) transplant national waiting list.
If you are not eligible for a kidney transplant, you’ll meet with your care team to discuss other treatment options and the next steps in your care.
After Selection
Selection for the transplant list at University Health allows you to:
- List yourself at other transplant centers (multiple listing)
- Start screening potential living donors
- Refuse transplantation at any time
