University Health Named High Performing Hospital for Maternity Care
U.S. News & World Report has named University Health a 2022-2023 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care. This is the highest award a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care, and it follows two other distinctions received this year.
Newsweek and Statista Inc. recognized University Health as one of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals in 2022. Money and The Leapfrog Group named University Health to its list of Best Maternity Care Hospitals in America – the only hospital in our region to make the list.
The awards highlight University Health’s exceptional services and set the stage for the opening next summer of the new University Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital.
The new hospital will offer women, children, and babies in Bexar County health care specifically designed to meet their unique needs. Medical experts and advanced technologies will provide families with comprehensive care for every patient. It will be the first hospital in South Texas exclusively focused on the health care of women and children in the community.
“University Health is well poised to move into the future. The opening of our new Women’s & Children’s Hospital next year will further support our growth and mission to provide quality and compassionate care to women and children,” said Irene Sandate, University Health vice president and associate chief nursing officer for women and children.
University Health’s Level IV maternal center works with moms during pregnancy and through the postpartum period. The University Health team supports patients throughout their maternity journey. When infants need extra care, our Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU, is ready to assist with any specialized needs.
“The accolades reflect the dedication of our staff. The team’s commitment to quality and compassionate care is unwavering,” said Dr. Patrick Ramsey, medical director for inpatient OB services with University Health and chief of the Division of Maternal-Fetal medicine at UT Health San Antonio. “The new state-of-the-art University Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital opening in August 2023 will further advance this institution as the leading maternal, neonatal and pediatric program in San Antonio and throughout South Texas.”
The annual U.S. News & World Report evaluation of maternity care helps assist expectant parents and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive maternity care. The evaluation’s methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality, such as C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, early elective delivery rates and vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) rates, among other measures.
