New Mobile Mercado will provide healthy food, cooking demonstrations and information about good nutrition during World Diabetes Day
Rolling grocery and demonstration kitchen will bring healthy nutrition where it’s needed in the fight against diabetes
BACKGROUND: Diabetes is a major problem in San Antonio and South Texas, made worse by the fact that healthy food choices are often hard to find — and hard to afford — in neighborhoods hardest hit by the disease. On World Diabetes Day, Monday, Nov. 14, University Health’s Texas Diabetes Institute and the San Antonio Food Bank will join together to improve access to healthy, affordable foods. The Food Bank’s new Mobile Mercado is a rolling grocery store, demonstration kitchen and teaching tool — designed to take good nutrition wherever it’s needed.
The Mobile Mercado will be visiting University Health family health centers and specialty clinics each month, bringing fruits, vegetables and other healthy items. In the kitchen, chefs will demonstrate how to prepare tasty meals.
Like landmarks around the world, the Texas Diabetes Institute will be bathed in blue light on World Diabetes Day, in solidarity in the fight against a disease that’s been described as a global epidemic. While diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in Texas, the disease is the fourth leading killer in Bexar County.
