Step into fall with stronger steps for a safer season
University Health, Brooke Army Medical Center and the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council are hosting the F.A.L.L. (fall awareness lengthens lives) Fest Resource Fair where adults can get free information about medication, as well as home and community safety.
Unintentional falls can be deadly for older adults. The CDC reports that deaths from falls have increased significantly from 2003 to 2023 for adults over the age of 65. Bone and muscle loss are common as a person gets older and can lead to fractures or bone breaks after a fall. These injuries can require surgery and recovery becomes more difficult as we age. The risk of infection or worsening of existing medical conditions also affects healing. And older adults may hit their head during a fall, causing brain injuries that lead to more serious complications.
“Falls are a common cause of injury that we see in the trauma department at University Health. A simple trip over a rug or tumble down the stairs can cause serious injury, particularly in older adults,” said Jennifer Northway, director of injury prevention at University Health.
Falls are preventable. Health care professionals and community partners will be sharing fall prevention strategies and showcase services that can help improve safety at this free community event.
