The hidden heart risks student sports physicals can uncover
Some student athletes who appear healthy, live with underlying heart conditions that can go undetected until strenuous physical activity places added stress on the heart. That's why sports physicals play an important role in identifying potential cardiac risks before students take the field, court or join marching band practice.
As part of our KSAT Community partnership, University Health explains how sports physicals, medical history reviews and — when recommended — electrocardiograms (EKGs) can help uncover hidden heart conditions that may increase the risk of serious complications. The story also highlights the warning signs families should discuss with their healthcare provider before the school year begins.
“Every year we hear about student athletes with hidden heart problems collapsing during activities,” said Dr. David Bush, a congenital cardiologist at University Health. “These events are rare, but they demonstrate why physical evaluations and accurate medical histories matter for students preparing to participate in athletics or marching band.”
