Back-to-School Health Checklist: A Parent's Guide

Back-to-School Health Checklist: A Parent's Guide

Summer is coming to an end, which means the kids will soon be headed back to school. It’s a busy time for caregivers who have plenty to worry about, from school supplies and new clothes to vaccinations.

Kids who are healthy, happy and well-rested have the best chance of succeeding in the classroom, and in life.

Dr. Amy Cobb, a pediatrician at University Health, shares some tips to get your child on track for a healthy and successful school year.

Check-Ups, Sports Physicals and Vaccinations

This time of year is always a busy one in pediatricians’ offices, and for good reason. Kids need to be healthy and caught up on their vaccinations before heading back to the classroom.

Schedule an appointment with your child’s pediatrician to get any necessary shots and a well-child checkup. If your child plays sports, they’ll also need a sports physical.

If your child has extra health needs, like special medications or an inhaler they need to keep in the school nurse’s office, talk with your pediatrician about ordering these, too.

Kids Need Good Sleep

Depending on their age, kids need between 8-10 hours of sleep each night. Summertime usually means sleepovers, late-night swims and movie marathons, which can disrupt your child’s sleep schedule. Get them back on track by helping them get to bed 15 minutes earlier each night until you reach an ideal bedtime.

Start the Day with a Healthy Breakfast

Good nutrition can have a positive impact on your child’s academic success. Starting the day with fiber, whole grains and plenty of water helps ensure your child has a clear head in the classroom and is fueled up for recess.
