A child with a generous spirit was destined to give life to others
Now his mother will meet the woman he saved – and her name is Destiny
When 7-year-old Jeremiah Martinez learned about organ donation, it made perfect sense to him. He told his mother that if something were to happen to him, that is what he would want to do. Sadly, a year later, while playing outside his home in Cotulla, Jeremiah became entangled in the rope of a swing. He was taken to University Hospital, but the trauma team was unable to save him.
In Austin, 170 miles to the north, 49-year-old Destiny Lehew was watching the window close on her life. Her liver was failing and she was down to 65 pounds and fading fast. Then she got the call.
On November 25, 2015, Jeremiah Martinez’ liver was transplanted into Destiny Lehew at University Hospital. Ms. Lehew has talked on the phone with Jeremiah’s mother, Desiree Martinez, and the two share a bond.
Tomorrow they will meet for the first time at University Hospital.
Media is invited to be present when they meet, learn about the importance of organ donation and see an ultrasound of Jeremiah’s gift to Ms. Lehew. Afterward, University Transplant Center and Texas Organ Sharing Alliance leaders will conduct a flag ceremony to honor Jeremiah and all organ donors.
