Giving school nurses the extra training to stop serious bleeding and save lives in an emergency

BACKGROUND: In a life-threatening emergency, it often falls to someone nearby to keep a badly  bleeding person alive until help arrives. That’s why the Stop the Bleed campaign aims to teach everyone a few simple skills to control life-threatening bleeding.

On Tuesday, April 25, some of the city’s top trauma surgeons and other members of University Hospital’s trauma team will lead the region’s largest Stop the Bleed class to date — with more than 100 Northside Independent School District nurses learning how to stop serious bleeding in an emergency. School nurses know a lot about keeping kids healthy. This course will demonstrate the specialized skills and tools for stopping blood loss.

University Health sponsors the Stop the Bleed campaign in partnership with the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council and national organizations. Classes are held on the first Monday of each month at University Hospital. In addition, community organizations, churches, schools and businesses can request a trainer to come to their location to teach the course to groups. These sessions can be requested online at StopTheBleedTx.org. Individuals and families can also sign up for classes at that website.
