Five University Health locations now offering the updated COVID 19 Vaccine
University Health has received an ample supply of the updated 2024-25 COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine and we’re making it available through many of our pharmacies on a walk-in basis. Check the locations and hours of availability at UniversityHealth.com/COVID.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are urging everyone ages 6 months and older to get the single shot, which closely protects against the current variants that are causing sickness.
“This updated vaccine better targets the strains that are circulating right now, said Dr. Jason Bowling, director of epidemiology at University Health and an infectious disease physician with UT Health San Antonio.
“We’ve moved away from the strains of the virus we were seeing in the middle of last year. The new 2024-25 vaccine more effectively protects against the mutations that are making it so contagious and infectious right now.”
Who should wait to get the shot?
Individuals who received the previous COVID-19 vaccine should wait three months before getting the updated shot. If you recently tested positive for the virus you may have a few months of immunity, but you should still plan on getting the updated vaccine in three months for the best protection. You do not have to wait for the COVID-19 vaccination if you are also scheduling your annual flu shot. You can get them at the same time.
Are there side effects?
The vaccine is considered safe and effective with the most common side effect being soreness in the area where the shot is given.
Will insurance cover the cost?
Most insurance, including Medicaid and Medicare, covers the cost of a COVID-19 vaccination. So does CareLink, University Health’s financial assistance program for qualified patients.
