Teaching kids how to "Walk This Way" on International Walk to School Day
Simple instructions on how to safely cross streets can save little lives
Too many kids are hit by a car and injured or killed, and it’s vitally important to teach them simple walking and crossing skills to prevent such tragedies.
On Wednesday morning, Safe Kids San Antonio, led by University Health, along with program sponsor FedEx and several key community agencies and partners, will visit Sarah King Elementary School. They’ll teach kids how to be safe when walking to school — or anywhere else they might encounter traffic.
In a recent audit, the area was found to need improvements in crosswalks and other pedestrian safety features, so agencies have teamed up to help kids get to school safely with the Walking School Bus.
More than 40 countries participate in International Walk to School Day to encourage safe routes to school for kids all over the world.
Unintentional childhood injury is the number one cause of death for children in the United States. In 2000, Safe Kids Worldwide and program sponsor FedEx created the Walk This Way Program in the United States to teach safe behaviors to motorists and child pedestrians and create safer, more walkable communities. Safe Kids and FedEx address the issue through research, physical improvements to school zones, and education and awareness campaigns throughout the year, such as International Walk to School Day.
